Prospective students who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher and will want to take 600-level coursework at any point during their Winthrop career as a non-degree or audit student are encouraged apply through Graduate Studies.
Any senior citizen who would like to take classes as an undergraduate student must complete an online application during the semester prior to desired entry/start date.
Please note: Senior Citizen students admitted through the Undergraduate Application process will be restricted from selecting 600-level courses.
Please be advised that only South Carolina residents who are 60 years or older are eligible for this program.
You must apply as one of the following types of students:
Degree Seeking: Taking courses towards earning a specific degree at the University. Degree-seeking students must meet the same admission requirements as non-senior citizen applicants. Official transcripts from high school and/or all colleges attended must be submitted.
Non-Degree Seeking: Taking courses to earn college credit, but not pursuing an awarded degree. Non-degree seeking students must submit an official copy of the final high school transcript or GED if the applicant has never enrolled in a college or university, or an official copy of the college transcript from the last college attended if the applicant has ever enrolled at a college or university.
Audit: Taking courses without earning college credit. Students who audit will not participate in examinations or graded course assignments. Involvement in class activities and attendance requirements is at the discretion of the instructor. Students who audit do not need to submit any transcripts if pursuing undergraduate classes.
Please be advised that admission as a degree seeking or non-degree seeking student does require your meeting all criteria for regular admission to Winthrop University. Failure to provide required documentation or meet adequate prerequisites may limit your options in terms of student classification.

Degree seeking: Taking courses towards earning a specific graduate degree at the University. Degree-seeking students must meet the same admission requirements as non-senior citizen applicants. Official transcripts from colleges attended must be submitted. Every degree program has additional requirements (GRE scores, letters of recommendation, etc.). Requirements for individual programs are listed by degree program.
Non-Degree seeking/Audit: Taking courses to earn credit or on a non-credit basis (audit), but not pursuing an awarded degree. Non-degree seeking senior citizen students must submit official college transcripts or a copy of their awarded diploma.
Students who audit will not participate in examinations or graded course assignments. Involvement in class activities and attendance requirements is at the discretion of the instructor. Audit students must submit an additional form following registration. *Some courses are not open to non-degree seeking/audit students.
Please be advised that some courses are not open to non-degree seeking or audit students.
When completing the online application, non-degree seeking and audit students should select "Graduate Non-Degree" as their academic program of interest.
Degree seeking applicants should refer to the listing of application deadlines for individual programs. Non-degree seeking and audit students must submit their applications by July 15 for Fall semester, December 1 for Spring semester or May 15 for Summer.
Graduate Studies will notify applicants via e-mail of the admissions decision.
