Winthrop's recreational facilities fall into two categories: those open to the general public, and those that are available only to members of the Winthrop community (faculty/staff/students) and other designated groups.
Many of the recreational opportunities afforded the general public are located at the east campus Lake Area Recreational and Research Complex approximately one mile from central campus off of Eden Terrace. The complex comprises the Winthrop Coliseum, Winthrop Lake, and numerous athletics and recreational fields. The challenging 18-hole disc golf course surrounding the lake and Coliseum is the annual site of the U.S. Disc Golf Championship. A one-mile loop surrounding the Winthrop Lake is one of approximately five miles of walking and bike trails that criss-cross the complex and conveniently connect to Rock Hill's public trails.
Members of the Winthrop community and other designated groups also may access a number of other recreational facilities. On main campus, the Lois Rhame West Health, Physical Education and Wellness Center offers many opportunities for recreation, including a two-story climbing wall, four racquetball courts, four basketball courts that can also be used for badminton and volleyball, an 8,000 square foot weight room, 2,000 square feet of cardio space with four additional cardio stations and two aerobic/activity rooms. Next door in the DiGiorgio Campus Center, the Winthrop community can take advantage of large recreational area that includes pool and ping-pong tables, board games and multiple video gaming systems.
A group team-building experience at Winthrop's Outdoor Educational Center (ropes course) also may be arranged for a fee.
