Dr. Stacy Martin is the Middle Level Program Director and an assistant professor in the College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences. She teaches and conducts research in middle level education and adolescent development. Dr. Martin earned her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina. Her research interests include multicultural education, adolescent development, and culturally responsive teaching in middle level education, and she serves as the president of the South Carolina Professors of Middle Level Education.
Dr. Martin is also the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) for Winthrop Athletics. In her role, she serves as a liaison between the university and the athletics department and as a representative of Winthrop in conference and NCAA affairs. The role of the FAR is to be a champion for academic integrity, student-athlete well-being, and responsible athletic operations within the NCAA Division I framework.
Prior to academia, Dr. Martin began her teaching career as a middle school math teacher in Sumter, South Carolina and has been in the educational field for over 28 years. After completing her master’s degree in Education Administration, she became a lead teacher, assistant principal, and then served 16 years as a middle school principal. She began teaching and supervising at Winthrop when she moved to Rock Hill in the summer of 2015. On a personal note, Dr. Martin enjoys playing golf, paddle boarding, and spending time with her four adult children. She is married to Brent Martin and resides in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
