Dr. David Schary is a professor of exercise science. He teaches and conducts research on sport and exercise psychology. Dr. Schary also serves as the Director of Mental Health and Performance for Winthrop Athletics. In his role, he provides counseling for student-athletes to improve their performance and well-being. Prior to academia, Dr. Schary coached high school and college rowing. He rowed for four years at the University of California, Davis.

Dr. Schary earned his Ph.D. in exercise and sport science with a concentration in exercise and sport psychology at Oregon State University. He completed his M.Ed. in counseling and development with a concentration in clinical mental health counseling at Winthrop University and is a licensed professional counselor associate (LPCA). Dr. Schary is also completing the requirements for the Association of Applied Sport Psychology’s certified mental performance consultant (CMPC).
