Since its founding in 1886, Winthrop University's central role in South Carolina has been to provide college educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds. Winthrop University's approved mission statement clearly states that "Winthrop University is a comprehensive public university that challenges undergraduate and graduate students of talent, ambition, and intellectual curiosity, equipping them to embrace and lead a world in transition by providing residential and online learning experiences and instilling critical thinking skills empowering them to create the future." The Eagle STEM Scholars Program's goal is to increase and support future leaders in the STEM fields.
