We’re in the groove!

How is it that we’re more than a month into the fall semester? We’re entering that time of year where the events calendar is full of events and happenings, and third-party rankings are rolling out. I will have more to share with you next week on our U.S. News Best Colleges placement, so please be on the lookout for that. In the meantime, I’d like to share some updates on these topics:

Family Day
This year’s Family Day will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5. I look forward to welcoming our families to campus as they visit their students and participate in a variety of fun and informative activities. If you’re on campus that Saturday, please extend a warm Winthrop welcome to those visiting us. That same day there will also be the 17th annual Motori Italiani free car show on the Dinkins lawn from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Italian cars and motorcycles will be on display so plan to check it out!

U.S. Disc Golf Championship
For the 26th year, Winthrop will host the U.S. Disc Golf Championship on the Winthrop Gold Course out at the Athletics, Recreation and Research Area. More than 100 players and thousands of spectators are expected to be here for the Oct. 10-13 event. There will be evening concerts, food vendors and much more. If you’d like to see the championship in action, you may purchase tickets here.

United Way Campaign
Each year we hold a university-wide effort to support United Way of York County (UWYC) and its bold goal to help 3,000 York County families become financially stable by 2030, a goal they’ve named ‘Power to Thrive.’ Winthrop’s campus community can help make that goal come to fruition. Did you know that the university has a notable history with United Way: we place student interns at UWYC annually; half of UWYC employees are proud Winthrop alumni; and nearly 90 percent of United Way’s partner agencies receive some sort of faculty assistance from Winthrop each year. This year’s campaign timeline is Oct. 21-Nov. 1. If you are able to do so, I encourage you to join me in supporting this year's effort by completing the online pledge form. If a paper giving form is preferred, please reach out to Nicole Chisari who is serving as our United Way ambassador for the second year.

Halloween
Many of you know that I enjoy Halloween. You may remember that last year Office of the President staff pulled together a Wizard of Oz-themed group costume (and yes, our dog, Cooper, was Toto and enjoyed the extra attention). I encourage everyone to start brainstorming a costume if that’s something that appeals to you. We’ll have some other things happening on that day that will be shared soon, but please know that costumes are encouraged!

Thanks to each of you for everything that you are doing to ensure that we have a successful fall semester. We’re off to a great start!
