The Dietetic Internship Certificate program combines theoretical and practical experiences that enable future dietetic professionals the opportunity to expand their knowledge and ability to excel in such areas of dietetics as medical nutrition therapy, public/community health nutrition, corporate wellness programs, sports nutrition, and school food service.

The Dietetic Internship has been granted continued accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Dietetic Internship Courses* required in the program include the following:
NUTR 632 (1). Orientation to the Practice of Dietetics (online)
NUTR 528 (3). Dietetic Internship: Supervised Practice Experience. ACEND accredited
dietetic internship.
NUTR 529 (3). Dietetic Internship: Supervised Practice Experience. ACEND accredited
dietetic internship.
NUTR 530 (3). Dietetic Internship: Supervised Practice Experience. ACEND accredited
dietetic internship.
NUTR 531 (3). Dietetic Internship: Supervised Practice Experience. ACEND accredited
dietetic internship.
Total Credit Hours: 12-13
*Dietetic Interns complete NUTR 632 in the summer semester prior to starting supervised
practice rotations, NUTR 528 and 529 in the fall semester, and NUTR 530 and 531 in
the spring semester.
Six hours of course work may be counted toward the M.S. degree in Human Nutrition;
in addition, interns may take NUTR 604, which may be applied toward the MS degree
requirements.
Students completing the MS in Human Nutrition program, post baccalaureate Dietetic Internship Certificate Program receive a Verification Statement and are eligible to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
In this program, students take 12 semester hours of graduate credit; six hours of which may be applied to the Master of Science in Human Nutrition degree program.
Applications to DICAS for the Winthrop University Dietetic Internship are due into DICAS no later than February 1. Interviews are by invitation only and applicants will be notified of this decision within 1 week of this due date. Applicants will receive notification of final decisions no later than March 1. The final decision to accept a dietetic internship program is March 15. Accepting the offer to join the Winthrop University MS DI Program is binding.
Students are required to have a baccalaureate degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university before they enter the Dietetic Internship program.
Applying for this program is a multi-step process:
Step 1:
Applicants apply through the Dietetic Inclusive Centralized Application Services (DICAS) Portal. Application requirements are available on this site as well as on the Winthrop University MS Dietetic Internship site. The deadline for applying to the MS Dietetic Internship through DICAS is February 1. Interviews will be conducted by invitation only on February 14 and offers will be extended prior to the end of February. Applicants are required to notify internship directors of their intent to enroll no later than March 15.

Step 2:
Accepting the offer to begin the MS DI program is binding. Once students accept, they will receive an application waiver code from the internship director and will apply to the online MS Human Nutrition program through the School of Graduate, Continuing, and Online Education. This application process will include submission of official transcripts and students may use their DICAS personal statement as part of this application.
Acceptance into the program is highly competitive. Selection criteria are based on:
Strength of the undergraduate academic record and the graduate academic record as applicable
Relevant work and volunteer experiences in the field of dietetics
Letters of recommendation

* The selection committee, composed of professionals in the field of dietetics and faculty members, evaluates the applications, interviews the candidates, and ranks them accordingly.
Please note: Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a minimum of a master's degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). In order to be approved for registration examination eligibility with a bachelor's degree, an individual must meet all eligibility requirements and be submitted into CDR's Registration Eligibility Processing System (REPS) before 12:00 midnight Central Time, December 31, 2023. For more information about these requirements visit CDR's website. In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in program(s) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Winthrop University Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) graduates may apply for preadmission to the MS DI program and should discuss eligibility with the DI director.
