Non-Degree Students
Graduate students who are fully admitted, or provisionally admitted, and degree-seeking may be eligible to receive federal and institutional financial aid.
Awards are typically made for the fall and spring semesters with a separate award for summer terms if any aid eligibility remains. Graduate students who plan to begin their studies at Winthrop University during the summer term should review the Summer School website.
Graduate students in one of the 100% online graduate programs will have their awards split evenly into three (3) semesters each year — fall, spring and summer.
Loans
Students who wish to receive federal loans beginning with the fall semester should plan to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by May 1 and list Winthrop's federal school code 003456 (September 1 for spring semester start up and March 1 for students beginning graduate school in the summer sessions.). Students must submit the FAFSA each year to be considered for aid.
Graduate students are eligible for a maximum of $20,500 per year in an Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan, depending on the student's cost of attendance (determined by the University) and other financial assistance programs received. Students must be enrolled at least half-time each term (4.5 credit hours) to be eligible to receive federal student loans.
Graduate students interested in applying for a South Carolina Teacher's Loan need to submit an application before the state's deadline each year. Funding is limited so apply early.
Graduate students may also be eligible to borrow a Federal Direct PLUS Loan to help cover educational expenses. View additional information.

Graduate students who are seeking a graduate certificate may be eligible for federal and institutional financial aid. Graduate students who are simultaneously seeking a Winthrop graduate degree and graduate certificate are eligible for all the aid discussed in the degree-seeking students section.
At this time, students seeking a graduate certificate for Dietetic Internship or Counseling may be eligible for the federal financial aid, assistantships/associateships and scholarships discussed in the degree-seeking students section.
Students seeking any other type of graduate certificate are not eligible for federal financial aid and should review the aid available in the non-degree students section. Students may also be eligible for the Graduate Scholarships and/or Graduate Assistantships/Associateships.
Students who are admitted as non-degree students are not eligible to receive federal student loans.
Students may be eligible to borrow a private loan from a lender who does not require a student to be degree-seeking. View additional information about lenders and private loans.
