The South Carolina Need-Based Grant is awarded to the neediest students who submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with priority given to those who file by Winthrop's priority deadline (February 1, 2025 for 2025-26).
As a public institution, Winthrop University receives limited funding from the State of South Carolina for this program so it is unable to provide funding to all students who potentially qualify. Recipients must be SC residents who also meet certain eligibility and renewal requirements.
Due to limited funding, the SC Grant cannot be automatically renewed each year. Students cannot receive more than a total of 8 terms of SC Grant during college enrollment. Students who have earned less than 120 credit hours/4 years of college will receive priority for funding. Returning students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and meet the SC Grant awarding requirements each academic year to be considered for funding. In most cases, state regulations require students to earn at least 24 credit hours in the prior academic year and have at least a 2.000 cumulative GPA to be considered for funding.
