The Master of Science in Athletic Training program prepares students for the national Board of Certification (BOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. This is a two year, full time program that emphasizes hands-on experience and includes the professional content mandated by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. This program is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

The MS in Athletic Training program is for applicants who have completed a baccalaureate degree with a major other than athletic training. If admitted to the program, coursework will begin in the summer semester of the same year. The MS in Athletic Training program requires year-round coursework (summer, fall, and spring).

This option is intended for well-qualified students in the Winthrop BS in Exercise Science program who will complete up to 18 hours of the work for the MS in Athletic Training degree program while enrolled in the undergraduate degree program.

*Current Winthrop undergraduate students pursuing the combined BS-MS Athletic Training program and who graduate in December should apply for the following spring.

Overall undergraduate GPA of 2.8 or greater.
Complete the following coursework with a C or better:
Human anatomy or Anatomy & physiology I with lab
Human physiology or Anatomy & physiology II with lab
General physics with lab
General chemistry
Human nutrition
Biomechanics
Exercise physiology
General psychology
Current certification in Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer or American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers.
Documentation of 75 hours of observation with certified athletic trainers.
Two recommendations from individuals who can verify applicant’s aptitude for graduate study.
Non-native English speakers must submit a TOEFL score of at least 550 on the paper-based test or at least 79 on the internet based test, an IELTS score of at least 6 or successful completion of level 112 of the Intensive English for Academic Purposes Program from an English Language School (ELS) center.
Successful completion of an invited on-campus interview with the MSAT Selection Committee.

Submit Intent to Pursue form no later than fall of senior year; consult the Graduate Program Director for the specific date when applications are due.

Athletic training is a health care profession that includes prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.
