This innovative course will combine on-line, face-to-face and experiential instruction over an eight (8) week period. The course will include a full week of activities in Charlotte before and during the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
The course material will cover the historical development of conventions; the politics, rituals and purposes of contemporary conventions; and examine how other countries select their chief executives. We hope to interview journalists, delegates, office holders, protestors, lobbyists, and other visitors who will be in Charlotte for this major event. In addition, students will study portions of the Republican National Convention and third (minor) party conventions.
The course is divided into four sections: online instruction, face-to-face meetings, a week of activities in Charlotte and a final project and class presentations. Most face-to-face meetings will be held on Fridays at 2 p.m.
This course is a truly unique opportunity to watch American politics in action and up close.
All students, irrespective of their political views and/or party preference, are welcome and encouraged to enroll in this class.
Prerequisite: None.
Fee: $100 (for six days of transportation to Charlotte, supplies, access to all activities. Pending final administrative approval.)
Open to: All undergraduate students, regardless of major. Freshmen-seniors welcome. Graduate students will be accommodated on a case-by-case basis.
