The Winthrop Alumni Association holds two alumni-elected seats on Winthrop’s Board of Trustees. It is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees to put forth Winthrop’s mission for its long-term benefit and to be vested in the university.
At the annual meeting of the Alumnae Association in 1958, members elected two alumnae to serve on the Winthrop Board of Trustees. Per the South Carolina General Assembly, the persons elected by the Winthrop Alumni Association or its successors to fill Seats 12 and 13 will serve six-year terms. All members of the Board of Trustees must be primary residents of the State of South Carolina. For more information, please refer to the bylaws of the Board of Trustees.
Winthrop is one of four public colleges/universities in South Carolina that have alumni-elected seats on its Board of Trustees. Of the public college and university boards the Office of the Secretary of State has on file, the only other college/university boards that includes members elected by alumni are The Citadel, College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina. The Citadel has three alumni-elected seats on its Board of Visitors, College of Charleston has one alumni-elected seat on its Board of Trustees and the University of South Carolina has one alumni-elected seat on its Board of Trustees.
