The Department of English offers a specialization in creative writing that supports students in producing their own publishable writing in various genres. Students can take classes in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, where they'll learn to write stories, novels, memoirs, and poetry in challenging yet encouraging workshops. Our students also get extensive experience practicing valuable editing skills and studying literature.
Dozens of our students have won writing awards and have published regionally and nationally in magazines and presses. Many of our students have gone on to study at prestigious graduate programs in creative writing where they have received full funding and scholarships. Our faculty strive to mentor our students in finding publication for their work and in seeking futures for their writing abilities.
Winthrop students have the opportunity to publish and edit with our own literary magazine, The Anthology. We also host the Winthrop Writers Reading Series, which brings national award-winning authors to campus every year to read and interact with our campus community.
Students will find many opportunities to read their work at public events, to share their work with a community of literary artists who takes their work seriously, to go to the Associated Writers and Writing Programs conference and to events and conferences throughout the Carolinas, and to be inspired and challenged by their classmates.
