a shared passion for all aspects of music, Winthrop’s Department of Music provides
supportive mentoring to foster yourdevelopment as a musician and to prepare you for a career in music. Winthrop offers
four undergraduate and three graduatemusic degree programs, including aBachelor of Arts degree in music with a concentration in music technology. Courses
cover fundamentals of music technology, audio recording/post-production,synthesis/signal processing, and audio for visual media.
We sponsor over 100 performances annually, most of which are free of charge and open

Bicentennial Brass Pioneers: Arban and Kosleck

Jean Baptiste Arban (1825-1889) and Julius Kosleck (1825-1905) are two brass pioneers celebrating their bicentennial birthdays this year. Join Dr. Elisa Koehler as she discusses the first professor of cornet at the Paris Conservatory (Arban) who wrote the world's most influential brass method book, and the godfather of brass chamber music (Kosleck) who was one of the first to play the music of Bach on an early piccolo trumpet in the late nineteenth century. Related issued discussed will include the cultural prejudice against brass soloists during the Gilded Age, the transition from military music schools to European conservatories, and the legacies of Arban and Kosleck that continue to influence trumpeters today.

From the recital hall to the practice rooms, the facilities we provide on campus include
advanced technology studios in all the musical arts. We have what you need to excel
and expand your talent.
For the safety of our community, all motor vehicles parked on the campus or any property
owned by Winthrop University, must be registered with the Winthrop University Police
Department and be issued either a Regular parking permit, a Temporary parking permit,
or a Visitor’s parking permit. Temporary or Visitor parking permits can be obtained
online either before or upon arriving on campus.
