Copiers
Printing Services maintains the campus copier fleet, and big changes are in store.
The current fleet of Canon devices will be replaced with Konica-Minolta machines in
December 2024. More information will be added to this site as the install dates approach,
but for now here is a recap of messaging that went out to the campus in October:
- Departments and offices will be getting one of two leased models, depending on current
copier size. Both will have full-color, high-speed scanning, mobile printing from
iPhone or Android, and the ability to print from or scan to a USB thumb drive.
- Each model will have the ability to do color copying, which is an option only a few
machines on campus have had with the Canon fleet. The print shop will remain the best
place for professional color printing of more involved print jobs and significant
quantities or anything for an external audience, but if a budget allows for minimal
color copying, it will be possible on the area’s copier.
- New print management software will be loaded with the new machines, which will allow
for “Follow-Me” secure print release. This means the system will hold a request until
it is released via a walk-up code or the proximity scan system (requires a new employee
ID card). This new technology will help cut down on wasted prints that are printed
and forgotten at the copier.
- As part of the new plan, a few machines were consolidated with others, and copiers
that work as fax machines will largely be phased out, although there will be several
designated machines for this use on campus.
- Finally, the cost of paper will be rolled into the per click charge (toner and staples
were always included), adding convenience and saving everyone money. Paper will be
stored at Central Receiving, whose staff will require only a regular facilities work
request to deliver during office hours.
Costs will remain 4.5 cents for black & white and 20 cents for color.
The new copier program also will allow Winthrop as a campus to move away from the
less sustainable and more expensive option of desktop laser printers. In addition
to increased electrical cost to Winthrop to operate, departments also are paying separately
for paper and toner for these machines which, when purchased, become Winthrop property.
IT has a plan to start phasing them out across campus beginning in January. During
the spring semester, new copier volumes will be determined, and the fleet will be
adjusted as needed.
In addition to enhancing sustainability efforts, these big changes are needed as Winthrop
works to meet the strategic plan priority of developing a next gen campus that will
transform Winthrop’s physical and digital landscape into a cutting-edge, advanced
and integrated cohesive environment.
