Winthrop University's Literacy Intervention Team (LIT) mobilizes college students to serve as reading tutors, with the goal to alleviate illiteracy in the Rock Hill community. Our trained university LIT members work with local kindergarten through fifth-grade students on literacy-based activities such as one-on-one reading, group reading, and guided reading to improve basis reading skills. Team members meet with children various times a week Monday through Friday, based on their class schedule and availability. In Spring 2024, Winthrop partnered with Richmond Drive Elementary in Rock Hill. In the past, we served children off-campus at various sites including York Road Elementary, Oakdale Elementary, and the Upper Palmetto YMCA.
LIT tutors are scheduled Monday - Friday throughout the school day and during the Challenger after school program. Students may be placed at one or multiple sites depending on desired hours per week and availability.
Students participating in the federal work-study program may be compensated at $11
hr for their service as a tutor. To apply as a LIT Work Study tutor, apply through
the Student Employment portal on the HR site.
